Writing Young Characters Authentically
With Dallas Woodburn
September 22nd and 29th
6:00pm-8:00pm (pacific)
Summary: How does one create teenage characters who feel honest and compelling to the reader? Whether writing fiction for teenagers or adults, it can be difficult to present teenage characters in an interesting and genuine way. This workshop will provide guidelines and examples, as well as writing prompts and exercises, to help writers create young characters authentically in fiction.
To address this topic, we will look at examples from contemporary adult and YA fiction, delve into our own memories of childhood and adolescence through writing exercises, and discuss the boundary between young adult fiction and adult fiction featuring teen characters.

My name is Dallas, like the city in Texas (although, fun fact, I was not named after the city–I was named after my Gramps, whose middle name is Dallas. But I did visit Dallas one time and the local diner gave me a free breakfast when I showed them my driver’s license.) I’m an author, editor, book coach, and podcaster. My life’s work is not only to share my stories, but also to help others tell the stories that matter most to them and embrace their best lives.
When I’m not writing or talking about writing, I spend my days chasing after my three-year-old daughter; soaking up time with my husband; hiking trails at a local park; tackling my always-overflowing TBR list; and baking pumpkin spice everything all year long.
